Monterey Bike Trip 2011
Green Ways to School has been working with the students across the county this year, teaching principals of sustainable transportation and organizing activities and events around bike riding. Green Ways to School coordinates with local non-profits and schools to connect the students with the cycling community.
Many students have put in countless hours of volunteer work, and we would like to recognize their efforts by inviting them on a bike tour to Monterey. The trip will be two nights, three days: May 28th, 29th & 30th. We will cycle to Monterey during Saturday, have breaks for lunch and snacks and arrive at the Monterey International Youth Hostel at dinnertime. The students will be provided all meals, snacks, and accommodations at the hostel. Community support and donations are making it possible to provide the tour at no cost to students who have done volunteer work for Green Ways to School.
It may sound daunting to ride to Monterey, but it is actually the perfect ride for a first-time bike trip. The route is flat, safe, and surprisingly easy. More than half is on an exclusive cycle path. Anyone with legs and a bike can do it. We will go slowly with many breaks. The group size will be small, 10 students and 6 adults. The leaders are education professionals with a background in cycling, trip leading, and medical training including First Aid. The students will be in a supervised group at all times with safety as the top priority.
Parents and students, please feel free to email or call my cell with any questions or concerns. I am really excited about the trip, and want to express my appreciation and admiration for all of our student volunteers!
